Smart Home concept has been around for over 100 years now!! Yes, as a 80s kid I enjoyed watching numerous cartoons, enjoying my share of fantasy world of retro high tech home of Jetsons, homes of ultra-Luxe DONS in Bollywood movies…which made every child live in magical world of smart home, where just a flip of button/voice or my gesture wakes up automated home to serve every convenience of inhabitant. These were not limited to movies/cartoons but historic innovations had triggered many companies across the globe to make footprint in advancing to make it reality. Most importantly innovation in electricity had triggered many utility companies across US back in 50s for massive campaign on Luxe Lifestyle via various electricity enabled devices and appliances.

Technological advances in Smart Home segment has been happening since quite a while. Nikolas Tesla’s creation of remote control for toy, back in 1898 marks true beginning of accessible consumer delight. As promising as this was, it would be several decades before electrical appliances became commonplace in the home, and even longer before technology could really deliver on the promise of technology ,could deliver remotely controlled devices. In 1966, Westinghouse engineer Jim Sutherland created ECHO IV, which was the first true home automation device, controlling temperature and appliances. Westinghouse (inventor of Alternative Current) back then came up with advertisement and many small stories on ” All Electric House”, giving taste of luxury living to residents & ignited dream of owning ultra-modern home, adding another dimension of pride of ownership and status symbol.

Coming back to now 2021, we see many of those dream have come true. For instance, in our homes, devices like Google Nest identifies friends or strangers outside the door, while GE lights can be programmed to control color to feel relaxed, Savant’s smart speaker brings movie hall experience to home, Samsung’s family hub refrigerator photograph’s contents left and suggest for recipe, Apple’s Air Tag helps to look for any misplaced items inside home, smart thermometers from various providers proactively read mood and sets the comfortable settings in home. These are just a few examples of what smart home devices can do, however list goes on to make comfort a priority with promise of providing secure and convenient way of living.
