What is Smart Device?
We are talking about Smart Phones, Smart Homes, Smart Cars etc.. over and over again but the main question still is that, What is a Smart Device? When we look up on internet like a PhD scholar Manuel Silverio, Coventry University, UK, while he was student in the UK, didn’t really find an definition saying what is Smart Device, not even a clear definition on Wikipedia, so he created one and wrote a journal paper for the same. As per him, “A smart device is a context-aware electronic device capable of performing autonomous computing and connecting to other devices wire or wirelessly for data exchange”. He further deduces with this definition for a device to be considered as Smart, it must have these three features: 1. Context-Awareness; 2. Autonomous Computing & 3. Connectivity. Also this ideally falls in the purview of the definition of the Internet of Things (IoT).
From a device perspective, Context-Awareness it is its ability to gather information at any time, and it is normally done by the cameras, microphones, global positioning system that are present in the smart phone. Autonomous computing is ability of device to perform task autonomously without interference from the user, this kind of suggestions is done by smartphones based on the weather or traffic congestion, when it suggests alternate route. Finally, Connectivity refers the ability of the device to connect to a network and without this connectivity, the smart device cannot perform either Autonomous computing or be aware the context.
Now, with these simple rules we can determine if an device is Smart or not.
