An article that I read earlier(30th April 2021) over Fosters Daily made me rethink… Yes think about how to educate domestic help on basics of cleaning electrical devices. Also thought on how to make shock proof designs more robust…. Will be researching more articles on product innovation on these lines and try update my learning…
Article below as quoted in Fosters daily:
DOVER – A 35-year-old woman was rushed to Portsmouth Regional Hospital Friday with non-life-threatening injuries, after she was electrocuted while cleaning a light fixture.
The incident happened at a residence on Pineview Drive in Dover, and the woman reported having chest pain and injuries to her hand and arm.
Dover Fire responded to the incident and Fire Chief Paul Haas said the injured woman was hired by the homeowner to clean the house. From the initial investigation, there does not appear to be any negligence with the wiring, according to Haas.
“She came into contact with a light fixture during the normal course of her duties and for some reason the light fixture appears to have been in contact with wiring behind it in a junction box,” Haas explained. “So the light fixture itself was actually energized so when she came into contact with it, she received a significant shock.”
Haas said that the department is still investigating the incident but warns that accidents like this can be more serious.
“It can very easily be a life-threatening situation depending on where you come in to contact with the electricity, and how the particular path it travels in your body to get to the ground,” Haas said. “It is a reminder of why it’s very important to make sure that any electrical work done in your house is not only permitted, but it’s done by a licensed electrician and is thoroughly inspected to ensure that you know the safeguards are in place to prevent something happening immediately or down the road.”
